Nail Discoloration

This is one of the most common conditions seen in a podiatristís office. It is usually caused by a fungus but can also occur after injury. There are also some dietary deficiencies, which will cause discoloration as well as certain drugs. Constant use of nail polish will also cause this. To determine if it is a fungus, a culture or slide test must be taken. Culture results generally take 3-5 weeks and false positives and negatives confuse the examiner at times. Although there are many topical medications on the market, experience has shown that the cure rate using these is quite poor. Unfortunately, the only effective treatment is oral medication, which will cure about 70% of fungus problems with nails. Although side effects from these medications are rare, the doctor will always order liver enzyme profiles before and during treatment to insure safety.
