A long, punishing ribbon of rocky scree or shifting sand can leave even the most devoted trail runner's legs feeling trashed. The need to constantly dodge and dance over a sharp, loose, or mucky surface is fun at first. But too much of that leaves a runner wishing for a softer surface underfoot and shade overhead.
That's why a trail through a pine forest-blanketed by a layer of soft or crunchy needles, depending on the amount of moisture they hold-is invariably a welcome respite and beautiful sight. As evidence, we present this trail runner's tribute to 21 of the pine-laden paths for which we are grateful.
