Since it's that time of year when most people's sugar intake increases, why not get in the spirit of the season and burn a few calories running a Halloween-themed race? Luckily, there's no shortage of events in the Twin Cities on Halloween weekend. From road races to trail runs, there's something for everyone.
If you need further convincing, October in the Twin Cities is perhaps the most pleasant month to get out in run. Cool temperatures, crisp air, and beautiful fall foliage should be enough to get you out on a Saturday or Sunday morning for a fun event. Grab your running buddy and a couple of costumes and get yourself registered for one of these top Halloween races in the area.
1. Terror Trot 5K/10K
The Terror Trot benefits the Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. Busy Body Promotions
Benefiting Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, the Terror Trot in Minneapolis allows you to run for a reason greater than simply burning candy calories. The flat and fast course around Lake Harriet will appeal to speed demons and the costume contest at the finish will be a favorite of the more spirited competitors.
2. Monster Dash Half Marathon, 10 Mile, and 5K
Featuring one of the more scenic courses in the metro area, the Monster Dash is also as fast as races come thanks to a 400-foot drop from start to finish on the half marathon course. Beginning near the impressive Cathedral of St. Paul, snaking its way along the gorgeous Summit Avenue, and finishing near the Mississippi River, this race is not to be missed.
3. Gray Ghost 5K
Dubbed the 'Halloween Capital of the World' Anoka takes Halloween seriously, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better town to run a Halloween race. The Gray Ghost 5K and 1-mile walk welcomes runners and walkers of all ages and experience levels. There are also plenty of other spooky events around town, if you want to get the full experience.
4. Great Pumpkin Chase
The Great Pumpkin Chase in Lake Elmo features a 5K, 10K, and Kids Dracula Dash Fun Run, you can bring the whole family to the run. Held at Lake Elmo Park Reserve, this event offers an excellent chance to get out and about to view the gorgeous fall colors that make the Midwest famous each fall.
5. Halloween Fearless 5K
The Fearless 5K features a scenic 5K in Maple Grove.
Run around Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove, the Halloween Fearless 5K features Halloween music, announcer shout-outs, and plenty of crazy costumes each year. Be sure to stick around after the race for an Irish breakfast, beer, and Irish coffee hosted by Claddagh Irish Pub .
6. Scare in White Bear 5K
This race is unique because it is held on Friday, Halloween Eve, under the cover of darkness. Throw on your favorite costume and head out to White Bear Lake where you'll run from West Park near the downtown area and along scenic Lake Avenue. Be sure to stick around for a post-race reception and costume awards.
7. Harvest Hoot 'n' Holler Adventure Run
If you're a trail buff, this is the race for you. The Harvest Hoot 'n' Holler in Rush City takes runners on a 5K or 7-mile adventure through the wooded trails, open fields, and tough hills of Treasured Haven Farm. Offering a variety of tough terrain, come ready to get muddy.
8. Trail Jam Half Marathon
Located about an hour south of the Twin Cities in Mankato, MN, the Trail Jam is another great trail event on Halloween. Requiring runners to traverse 13.1 miles of gorgeous and rugged trails, the scenery can't be beat. Even better, there will be a well-deserved hot cider waiting for all runners at the finish line.
