Positive affirmations can assist us in reducing stress and changing negative thought patterns, while reprogramming our subconscious minds to see the world through a more optimistic perspective. That being said, starting our day with positive affirmations may seem like an obvious good practice to put into place. It's a wonderful way to start the day feeling grounded and encouraged.
However, it’s also easy for it to feel like an additional chore to add to our already long to-do lists. And oftentimes, we overcomplicate the process and overload our minds with too many affirmations. But that doesn't need to be the case. Positive affirmations don’t need to be daunting, and with less than a minute, you can start your day with positive intentions. Read on for three simple and digestible positive affirmations to begin your day.
I choose to begin the day with gratitude
The concept of practicing gratitude is not new to most of us. In fact, the idea may sound overused and unhelpful, especially when life feels particularly chaotic. How in the world is practicing gratitude going to be helpful when perhaps it feels like things are falling apart? Trust me, we have likely all felt that way before. However, starting your day with gratitude is a wonderful way to begin it on a positive note.
Oftentimes, we tend to make our gratitude statements such as “I’m grateful that I can see” or I’m so grateful that I woke up today.” Those are indeed wonderful things to be grateful for, I appreciate both of those things. However, it can be helpful to be even more specific. “I’m so grateful for the text message from my good friend.” “I’m so grateful for this cup of coffee.”
Being specific and also appreciating the simplest of things can make continuing our gratitude practice more sustainable while boosting our mood to start the day. In the words of Robert Holden, “The miracle of gratitude is that it shifts your perception to such an extent that it changes the world you see.” It won’t guarantee a perfect day, but may allow you to see things slightly differently.
Something amazingly awesome is going to happen today
This affirmation is courtesy of Pam Grout from her book, Thank & Grow Rich: A 30-day Experiment in Shameless Gratitude and Unabashed Joy. Before you write this affirmation off as pie in the sky, consider that when we start our day with positive affirmations, we are setting our intentions for the day. What better intention to set for the day than to say that something amazingly awesome is going to happen to you?
The key to this affirmation is looking for the ‘amazingly awesome’ in what we may sometimes see as mundane. One thing that many of us have probably realized during the COVID-19 pandemic, is how much we took for granted; simple things like coffee with friends, or being in our communities regularly. So when we set the intention that something amazingly awesome is going to happen, don’t overlook the magic that shows up in your life. Perhaps you find a $10 bill while taking a walk or maybe the person in line in front of you pays for your coffee. That my friend, is something amazingly awesome. Set the intention and look for something awesome. Trust me, it will show up.
Today I will show myself compassion
Being our own worst critic is a job we tend to be experts at. However, showing ourselves kindness and compassion instead of disdain can make the challenges of the day so much easier to face. Realistically, it’s a rare occasion when everything in our day goes perfectly. There are ample opportunities for frustrations to arise and it’s easy to blame, judge, and treat ourselves harshly. Starting the day with the intention and affirmation to show ourselves compassion allows us to navigate it with more ease.
While positive affirmations can’t guarantee that your day will be without challenges, they can help you overcome self-sabotaging thoughts and allow you to start your day feeling grounded and prepared to handle whatever is thrown at you. They can remind you to keep a lookout for the magic in the small moments. Try starting your day tomorrow with these three actionable affirmations, and repeat them throughout the day for an added mood boost.
